Outreach Worker and Volunteer Coordinator

Location: Kansas City, MO, In person only. Remote work not available
Hours: 25 hours per week, part time, some evenings required
Compensation: $30 per hour, mileage reimbursement

Agency Summary:

Confluence HRKC promotes the health, dignity and well-being of people who use drugs, by providing practical tools alongside social, educational, and emotional support. We prevent overdose, educate participants about harm reduction strategies, promote the autonomy of people who use drugs, and help facilitate Any Positive Change.

Almost all of the naloxone we distribute goes directly into the hands of people who use drugs, who are most likely to be present at an overdose. We are the largest distributor of this life-saving medication in the state of Missouri.

We know that every overdose death is a preventable one and we believe in developing programs that are low-barrier, compassionate, and drug user-centered and always strive to meet our participants with love and respect.

We conduct street based outreach and home deliveries to get life saving supplies into the hands of people who need them most.

Job Overview:

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for managing and engaging with volunteers through various volunteer activities. This position is also responsible for coordinating community events. As a core responsibility, approximately half of the time per month, the Volunteer Coordinator will participate in delivery and outreach.

Key Responsibilities:

● Communicate with Logistics Director to ensure sufficient kits are prepared for the week’s delivery; if necessary, schedule volunteers

● Maintain volunteer handbook including volunteer onboarding materials

● Host regular volunteer orientation and volunteer shifts

● Schedule volunteer shifts

● Manage volunteer communications and volunteer records

● Deliver educational trainings in community spaces, including naloxone trainings,and participate in community events

● Manage relevant budgets in collaboration with Finance Director

● Maintain organization social media, including content creation

● Coordinate intern program in collaboration with the General Team

● Recruit volunteers including creation of recruiting materials and public engagement

● Prepare and complete deliveries and outreach every other week as scheduled utilizing both personal and company vehicles

● Complete regularly scheduled outreach and delivery shifts and offer coverage as needed, including outreach preparation such as kit making

Qualifications:

Required:

● Valid Missouri drivers’ license to operate company and personal vehicles. After hire, a class E license is required. A reliable personal vehicle is required for regular use.

● Must be 21 or older

● Smart phone with sufficient access to mobile internet (monthly stipend provided).

● Background check required, criminal charges do not necessarily disqualify applicants

Desired Experience:

● Interacting with a wide variety including people and animals, including people with mental health conditions and substance use disorder

● At least 1 year coordinating and supporting volunteers with previous experience as a volunteer

● Understanding and ability to incorporate client confidentiality and respect of client choices

● Ability to work independently and in a team environment

● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

● Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite

● Strong ability to handle multiple tasks and strategically prioritize tasks based on organizational needs

● Experience and training in descalation

● A strong understanding and commitment to evidence based, person centered interventions for substance use, HIV prevention, and overdose prevention

● Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and the inclusion of people with lived experience

● A genuine curiosity and deep respect for the communities we serve is equally welcome.

● Personal or family experience with drug use, criminal (in)justice involvement, homelessness, or sex work

Working Conditions:

This position requires frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs. Over 50% of assigned duties occur outdoors, including parks, homeless encampments, and driving in all weather conditions. Must have the ability to frequently walk on uneven terrain, stairs, and other unpredictable conditions.
